Hugh Bohane began his journalism career at 18, interning at Recovery magazine, an ABC-affiliated publication under Terraplane Press in Sydney.
Shortly after, he traveled to Sri Lanka to cover the civil war, filing reports for Amnesty International’s Human Rights Defender Magazine.
As a freelancer, he documented Sri Lanka’s brutal conflict until its conclusion in 2009, covered the aftermath of the 2004 tsunami, and assisted local humanitarian agencies.
In 2003, he worked at the Vanuatu Daily Post, interned at ABC Radio and Television in Sydney, and briefed aid workers at AUSTCARE, an Australian aid agency.
Hugh spent 11 years in China, teaching ESL and freelancing for expat and international magazines while becoming proficient in Mandarin.
In 2016, he reported from predominantly Syrian refugee camps in northern Greece for Euronews. He later moved to Vietnam, covering natural disasters, human trafficking, and the COVID-19 pandemic.
In 2019, he chronicled the pro-democracy protests in Hong Kong for The Diplomat, SupChina (The China Project), and Asia Pacific Report.
In early 2021, he reported on Myanmar’s military coup for The Diplomat, The Critic, and VOA. That same year, he mentored journalism students at the Thessaloniki International Media Summer Academy in Greece.
Hugh later moved to Armenia, covering the Caucasus region and the ongoing Armenia-Azerbaijan border conflict. During a key assignment, he embedded with the EU Border Capacity Mission and reported for Caucasus Watch in Germany.
In January 2022, he flew to Ukraine to report for ABC TV and was on the ground when the Russian military invasion began. He was among the last foreign journalists to leave Mariupol before Russian forces captured the city.
That same year, Hugh led a year-long investigation into modern slavery in Italy, funded by a grant from Free Press Unlimited. At the end of 2022, he relocated to Morocco before returning to Australia after more than 15 years of reporting across four continents.
Since his return, he has worked as an Associate Producer at SBS, a senior journalist at The Examiner, and currently works for 7 Tasmania News.
At the end of 2024, he provided on-the-ground analysis of the pro-EU protests and national elections in Tbilisi, Georgia, for various media outlets.
An experienced multimedia journalist and news producer, Hugh has covered conflict, geopolitics, current affairs, human interest stories, the arts, and travel. He holds a bachelor’s degree in Communications and Journalism from Griffith University and is based in Tasmania, Australia.
